My Current Skincare Routine

12th December 2016 in Skincare - 18 Comments - 4 min read >/div>

Hey Beauties!

I seem to get asked a lot these days what I use in terms of skincare and I thought this would make quite a good blog post.  So, I’m going to talk about everything I’ve used, what’s worked for me and what hasn’t! Recently I’ve started becoming quite serious in how I look after my skin, of course before I was still interested but it was more cleanse, moisturise done basically.

I would say that I have combination skin simply because it’s not dry or oily it seems to be both, sometimes it’s even dehydrated as well which is a nightmare. I’ve started trying to balance my skin and take better care of it by drinking more water and using the right products for my skin.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Sunday Riley Blue Moon Cleansing Balm (£46)

Let’s start at the beginning (duh!  ha ha). I usually use a balm cleanser as I’m not a fan of foams or liquids.  What I find works best for me is the Sunday Riley Blue Moon Cleansing Balm as this helps to remove everything without any effort.  I love the fact it’s so hydrating as,  a lot of time when using cleansers, my skin feels quite tight and stiff which is never a good feeling but with Blue Moon I never get that

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Rodial Dragons Blood Hyaluronic Tonic (£33)

Next I would normally spritz  my skin with the Rodial Dragons Blood Hyaluronic Tonic, which again is all about plumping my skin as it can get quite dry/dehydrated on my nose and cheeks. I find this works great as it helps to rehydrate my skin but also soothes the skin so can used throughout the day if you need a little hydrating boost. I usually apply this before putting on a serum because I feel like it helps to let the serum penetrate better.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil (£85)

I would then apply either Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil or the REN Flash Hydro-Boost. In the morning I would apply the Flash Hydro-Boost all over my face then once again I would spray my finger tips with the Dragons Blood Hyaluronic Tonic.  Hydro-Boost is activated by water but by using the tonic I find it super charges the serum causing it to work better than it would with just water. At night I use the Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil which is a retinoid oil that reduces the appearance of pores, helps to control acne and flights against the signs of aging. I’ve only been using this for about a week now and even though it’s not enough time to say if anything has changed or gotten better I feel rather hopeful for this product.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Benefit Dream Screen (£25)

When using retinol you have to make sure you are using a full spectrum SPF because retinols cause sun sensitivity so you’re going to have to apply a good facial SPF at least SPF30.  I’m using the Benefit Dream Screen because not only is it a fantastic sun screen it’s also mattifying which is perfect for what I need.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Sunday Riley Good Genes (£85)

I have been swapping out the REN Flash Hydro-Boost for the Sunday Riley Good Genes which is a Lactic Acid Treatment which helps to brighten, exfoliate, reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and boosts radiance. Again I have only been using this for about a week now but with this I can notice a difference because my skin is usually quite uneven in texture as well as colour but when using this I feel like my skin is softer and much more even in tone not to mention doesn’t look as dull either. I want to see what effect this has on my skin in the coming months.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream (£32.50)

Eye Cream is usually applied next in the form of the Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream.  I like to apply my eye cream before moisturising because I feel like it penetrates better than it would layered on top. I’ve been using  Hydrating Eye Cream for quite a while now and I’m really liking it of course nothing will compare to the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Eye Cream but  Hydrating Eye Cream works best for me during the winter months mainly for the hydrating effects it gives me.

My Current Skincare Routine - Beauty and The Boy
Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream (£60)

Last but not least is the Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream. From the first time I used this I knew it was going to be good. I think I have a good sense of whether or not I’m going to like a moisturiser and I loved this because like its name.  I felt a tidal wave of hydration hit my face when I used it. Since I have only been using this for a week as well I have yet to see any long term effects but I’m looking forward to seeing what this has to offer me

  • I see this all the time people talking about shrinking their pores by using hot water and closing them with cold water but this simply isn’t possible
There are no muscles connected to the pore so there is no way for them to open and close. The size of pores is largely down to genetics and there is not much you can do to change that.

He only muscle that can be found is the arrector pili which causes goose bumps by pulling the hairs up on your skin but it doesn’t have anything to do with your pores and tightening them.
When you see an enlarged pore it doesn’t mean it’s open it most likely means it’s congested with dead skin cells and hardened sebum however you can fix this by using something like salicylic acid which can penetrate the pore lining and flush everything out making the pore appear smaller.

While there are products out there that can blur and temporarily tighten the skin there is nothing permanent out there that can change the size of pores.

  • If you haven't already heard Kylie Jenner is now dipping into skincare as well as makeup.

All I'll say is it's completely different putting a makeup line together as that's rather easy but trying to put together a skincare line that's actually useful and not a bunch of generic rubbish is harder.

Kylie Jenner has effectively repackaged one of the worst face scrubs known to man, St Ives Apricot Scrub!
This new scrub will contain crushed walnut shells as it's main exfoliant which couldn't be worse for the skin as it has the tendency to cause micro tears in the skin if it's used roughly and can lead to all sorts of problems from letting bacteria into the skin to comprising your hydrolipid barrier.

With all of these new technology in skincare coming from brands like Deciem it feels like this Kylie Jenner product is coming from the late 2000s. To me it just screams lack of thought and can we talk about how generic it is? It's like all she wants to do is make more money instead of actually formulating something actually useful.

What do you think about this new range? .

  • I know your first instance when it's really sunny is to strip off and enjoy the sun and while it's true you should enjoy the gorgeous days of summer you should be protecting yourself.

While we should be wearing sunscreen everyday it's especially important on beautiful sunny days like these.

You should be applying a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every 2/3 hours when you're out in direct sunlight.

It's recommended that you use at least 20p piece size of sunscren for your face.
I absolutely love the @larocheposayuki Anthelios range especially the Fluid version of Anthelios. I also really like @colorescienceuk sunforgettable mineral SPF 50 powder for reapplication when wearing makeup.

  • There's this idea that somehow applying more of a product will get you better results but this isn't true.

The opposite is actually true if you apply more all you'll get is unnecessary irritation and it might put you off using a product.

When using actives try to follow the recommendations on the back of the packaging.

I know I've done this before when I first used AHAs and it didn't go well but I'm glad I eventually learned as my mum would say "I'm a bull in a China shop" 🤣🤣

  • *SKINCARE ROUTINE*
I thought I would mix up my routine a little bit lately.

Cleanser- @dermalogicauk Special Cleanser - I love this little bottle it's great for using when at the gym. It's a basic cleanser that gets the job done.

Tone/Serum - @katesomervilleskincare Dermalquench Liquid Lift *gifted* - I apply it straight after cleansing. This is a spray loaded with hyaluronic acid and oxygen, apparently it's meant to felt firm and smooth whilst quenching and plumping the skin hence the name. It really is amazing if I'm honest it's as if you're just wiping away any dehydration and puffiness.

Serum - @officialmedik8 Hydr8 B5 Intense *gifted* - Whilst I do feel like this is way too expensive for what it is I do really like it. Hydr8 is really hydrating and soothing Its great for using with a retinol as it helps to combat the dryness with the Natural Moisturising Factors (NMF)

Treatment - @sundayriley A+ Retinoid Serum *gifted - This is a brand new retinoid to me I originally used Luna which was the first ever retinoid I used so I was pretty excited to try this out. it says it's 6% it's more like a 4/5% because there's no way the plant like ingredients actually constitute as retinol. Other than that I'm liking it it doesn't compare to Adapalene but it's still good.

Moisturiser - @stubborncosmetics Customised Moisturiser *gifted - I am freaking loving this moisturiser it's so good to have a different moisturiser for the different parts of my face. I'm amazed no one has had this idea before it's so simple yet genius! I have combination skin so there is a side for the dry patches and a side for the oily parts of my face. This is a truly balancing moisturiser ❤️
