  • I often get asked why I haven’t reviewed or talk about products I get send...well because I only have one face and this is the amount of products I’ve been sent recently.

I can only try out so many products at once given that it’s only me trying them.

I’ve been taking a break from the blog as I’ve been feeling burnt out putting so much effort into writing posts for nothing to come out of it.

What would you like to see me talking about next? .

  • I see a lot of people measuring the pH of their products and yes whole pH is an important factor in products as a top high pH (alkaline) can cause damage to the hydrolipod barrier that products our skin, it’s not the be all and end all in products.

It’s much more complicated than just saying a product is bad because it has a high pH. Formula is king, it’s all about how the ingredients play together to make a good product. .
.
It’s always best to go on how does the product work for you? If you use it and you feel like it doesn’t work for you, it sensitises your skin or irritates it then of course don’t use it but if you’re using a product that is working for you and there are no side effects in my opinion there’s no point in ditching it just because someone said it’s got a higher pH.

If you’re curious or have any questions that I can’t answer check out @sisterscientist She’s absolutely amazing so friendly and a chemical engineer by trade ❤️

  • You all know how I feel about these “free from” claims on products in my opinion they are completely unnecessary and take advantage of your fears. I want to know what’s in a product and I don’t care what it doesn’t contain.

It seems like the EU agrees as well! According to new guidelines brands will be banned from including free from claims on products and all I can say is FINALLY!
The new guidelines say that you can’t use the “free from” claim because that implies that those substances are harmful and should be avoided, when actually they are not. It’s basically misleading to the customer.

Parabens as you know are completely fine they aren’t dangerous and are the most researched preservative on the market, Mineral Oil again not a problem GMOs? They’ve got to be dangerous again wrong 90% of the food you eat at the store has somehow been genetically modified in some way etcetera etcetera.

Whilst there are exceptions like you can claim they are free from animal byproducts but they have to be based in fact and actually have to be free of the products you say they are.

Im so glad that free from claims have finally been banned because that means it’s a step in the right direction to stop brands using fearmongering and pseudoscience to make people buy their products

  • Do we really know what the term "sensitive skin" means?
A lot of the time the term “sensitive skin” is thrown around and misunderstood, sometimes people just have a simple reaction and just because your skin reacted to one ingredient it doesn't mean your skin is sensitive everyone has these problems we have products that our skin doesn't like and others it prefers this doesn't mean it's sensitive.

A lot of the time when people say "I have sensitive skin" they actually don't have sensitively skin they have what is known as sensitised skin which can happen through using the wrong products for your skin, over cleansing, over exfoliating which can end in striping down the hydrolipid barrier that protects our skin from the outside world.

What these people are feeling is the effects of impaired barrier function e.g. excessive dry skin, redness, itchiness as well adverse reactions to simple products like hyaluronic acid. While this might suck in the long term it's possible to build the protective barrier up over time but it requires you to take it easy and use the right products for your skin.

I love @ceraveuki as all of their products contain a mixture of skin helping ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides, a key component in our hydrolipid barrier.

Then we have the truly sensitive type skin, these people were born with sensitive skin. People with an innately sensitive skin are quite rare as the majority of people with “sensitive skin” tend to be those who have caused problems with this skin barrier.
People with sensitive skin tend to have less pigment in their skin and a thinner epidermis, thus causing them to have less of a protective barrier. They also can't use a number of different products/ingredients because of content irritations. There isn't much that can be done about having sensitive skin apart from being really careful in what you use and how far you can push your skin.

Do you have sensitive skin? How do you manage it? .

  • When it comes to sunscreen applying a little and savouring it isn’t going to help you.

The biggest issue with people applying sunscreen is that they don’t apply enough so they aren’t getting the coverage that is promised on the bottle, more is more when talking about sunscreen.
When applying sunscreen you need to be applying 2mg per square centimetre which is about the size of a 20 pence Pearce according to the NHS.

The problem with people not applying enough sunscreen means that if you apply a SPF 50 thinking you’re going to get that amount of protection and you don’t apply enough you’ll probably get around an SPF 30 or less depending on how much you’ve applied.

If you are going to use sunscreen and you should everyday look for SPF 50 because even if you don’t apply the correct amount you’re mostly likely going to still get around SPF 30 but it’s so important to try and use the correct amount above all else.

  • Salicylic acid is one of my favourite ingredients in the fight against acne! Not only does this wonder ingredient exfoliate the skin it helps to keep the skin clear since salicylic acid is oil permeable it can pass the pore lining where acne is formed and clear it out.

A less known fact about salicylic acid is it comes from Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) so it has natural inflammatory properties so it not only clears but helps to soothe at the same time. I often use it on papules that appear on my skin that hurt and it tends to reduce them in size as well as pain.

Since salicylic acid is a derivative of Aspirin it is suggested that it you have an allergy to Aspirin then you should avoid using salicylic acid.
